I-95 Betsy Ross Interchange

The Betsy Ross Interchange reconstruction is a key component of PennDOT’s ongoing effort to modernize the I-95 corridor through Philadelphia. The multi-phase project improves traffic flow and safety at one of the region’s busiest interchanges while enhancing connections between I-95, Aramingo Avenue, and the Betsy Ross Bridge.

A signature feature of the project is a 50-foot-tall T-Wall® retaining wall supporting the reconstructed interchange ramps. Completed in 2023, the structure was recognized as the tallest T-Wall installation in the world at the time of construction, demonstrating the versatility of the system for challenging transportation infrastructure applications.

The wall was designed to support significant grade changes within the constrained urban project corridor while minimizing the footprint required for construction adjacent to existing roadways. The precast concrete system provided an efficient solution that helped maintain project schedules and reduce impacts to surrounding infrastructure.

In addition to its structural role, the T-Wall incorporates an architectural finish inspired by the American flag. The pattern creates the appearance of flowing stripes across the wall face, providing a distinctive visual element for motorists traveling through the interchange and reflecting the project’s importance within the Philadelphia transportation network.

The Betsy Ross Interchange project has received industry recognition for its engineering and construction achievements and represents another example of innovative retaining wall solutions supporting critical transportation improvements along the I-95 corridor.
