When New York State began the fourth and final phase of the Kew Gardens Interchange project in Queens, the goal was to improve one of the region’s most heavily traveled and complicated highway interchanges. The interchange connects the Grand Central Parkway, Van Wyck Expressway, Jackie Robinson Parkway and Union Turnpike and serves nearly 600,000 vehicles each day.
Phase 4 included the reconstruction and reconfiguration of roadways, ramps and bridges throughout the interchange. The $366 million project included five new bridges, replacement of six existing bridges, wider lanes and shoulders, and improved ramp connections.
T-Wall® at Kew Gardens
The complex roadway geometry required retaining walls to support changes in elevation throughout the interchange. Geoquest USA supplied T-Wall® retaining wall systems as part of the Phase 4 improvements.
